Ooni arrives Alake’s palace

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, arrived in the palace of Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo at exactly 3.37pm on Sunday, with a retinue of monarchs from Osun State and chiefs.

He was received by the Egba monarch, including chiefs and other prominent sons and daughters of the state. The Secretary to the State Government, Ogun State, Taiwo Adeoluwa, represented the state government.

About two weeks ago, Oba Ogunwusi had visited the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, at his palace in Ijebu Ode, preaching unity among monarchs in Yorubaland.

He is in Alake’s palace in continuation of his unity crusade

Mbaka: Priest, Politician Or Renegade? By Reuben Abati

Catholic priests in Nigeria have always captured the public imagination, some of them have served in government positions, some were prominent in the fight and struggle for democracy, some of them have proved their mettle as poets, teachers, musicians, social critics, and public affairs commentators, but Rev. Fr. Ejike Camillus Anthony Ebenezer Mbaka is a cut above the rest, not necessarily in terms of intellect or persona, but in terms of how he has been able to use the pulpit to acquire a rock star status.

It is therefore not surprising that everything about him is with a touch of the histrionic. This is exactly what happened when he was transferred, last week, from a parish where he had served for 20 years: from Christ the King Parish, GRA Enugu, to Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Umuchigbo, Njinike, Enugu. Characteristically, this radical priest and social activist turned what should be a routine administrative posting by his Bishop into a melodrama and an assault on the authority of the Church. You would think he had been sentenced to a jail term, the way he whined and wept and appealed to sympathy.

"I'm going to suffer because I have no place to put my head. I am going to suffer because I have no place to keep the Adoration Ministry's assets…The Adoration Ministry is passing through suffering right now even though I've accepted that it is the will of God. Is the will of God through suffering? It is a mega suffering. The quantum of the assets of the Adoration Ministry is the only thing I am bothered about for now. Where am I going to keep them? I am going to stay in one small room that has only one small bed, one small table, little toilet and bathroom. So where am I going to keep all the Adoration assets? " I couldn't believe that this was a Catholic Priest.

His pain was so palpable. He even took a shot at the Church:

"I won't fight anybody or even dream of battling anybody. If anybody allows the devil to use him, the same that advised you to make a mistake will laugh at you when you cry over the error." This was a clear suggestion that the devil was using his boss, the Diocesan Bishop of Enugu, His Lordship Calistus Onaga, against him, Mbaka and the Adoration Ministry. Rev Fr. Mbaka further spoke with a touch of vanity about how he single-handedly built the Christ the King Parish, Enugu, with proceeds from the sale of his music albums. This priest is certainly special. He objects to suffering even if the Lord Jesus Christ, whose disciple he is, is the embodiment of sacrifice and suffering. He talks about assets in a capitalistic sense, and yet his reputation rests on his commitment to the poor. He finally says he accepts the "suffering", sounding like a victim.

Mbaka's melodrama was nothing short of an act of protest and incitement. It didn't take long before a mob-like group trooped to the GRA, Enugu to help him move his things to the new church where it is said he will be an assistant priest. If his followers had laid their hands on the Diocesan Bishop, only God knows what they would have done to him for allegedly demoting their hero.

It also didn't take long before the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC), South-East Caucus, Osita Okechukwu issued a statement alleging that Mbaka was being victimized because he is pro-Buhari and pro-APC.

Okechukwu's intervention was a needless busybody act. He only stopped short of asking the Diocesan Bishop to reverse himself or get labeled as an enemy of the government of the day. Nor did it take long before the Catholic Church also put its feet down, staing clearly that no priest is above the Church. Mbaka definitely needed that reality check. But he had succeeded in politicizing his transfer and dragging the Catholic Church into mainstream, partisan politics with the Church holding the short end of the stick.

It is perhaps for this reason that the Catholic Bishop of Abuja Metropolitan See, Cardinal John Onaiyekan once asked that Rev. Fr. Mbaka should be sanctioned. He actually accused him of talking "rubbish" when he openly condemned President Goodluck Jonathan and insisted that the electorate should vote for Muhammadu Buhari, then Presidential candidate of the APC, who according to him, was destined to win the 2015 Presidential election.

"I do not believe in my mind that the way things are in Nigeria, any Catholic priest has the mandate to decide which of the political contestants should be voted for… I don't believe a priest should be doing that...If he was in my archdiocese, I will have sanctioned him long ago for the kind of utterances he makes." Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama. President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), also similarly disowned him. Even with those protestations, Mbaka remained untouchable. He is on record as having declared in a secessionist mood, for example, that the sovereignty of Nigeria is not sacrosanct. "If we must be one Nigeria, let it be one Nigeria, but if it can't be one Nigeria, let us divide…let us tell ourselves the truth."

He has also since the 2015 elections, made a high profile visit to the Presidential Villa to see President Buhari. He was actually shown arriving in a private jet, waving to the crowd as if he was on a Papal visit to the seat of power! How did one priest, out of over 30 million Nigerian Catholics, become so powerful and untouchable?

Rev Fr. Mbaka's seeming invincibility lies in his significance and relevance. His Ministry is a loud comment on the relationship between the Church and the congregation. Mbaka is the founder and Spiritual Director of a Ministry within the Catholic Church known as Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria (AMEN). Gifted, creative and clever; he is without any doubt a liberation theologian.

He runs a prophetic church, a church that believes strongly in the power of the Eucharist, and which in every sense is a church of the poor. His source of inspiration must be those liberation theologians and other radical priests who have proven that for the church to be relevant, it must be relevant to the interests, concerns and expectations of the congregation, particularly the underprivileged poor.

More than any other catholic priest in Nigeria, Mbaka has taken the Catholic Church beyond the confines of liberal conservatism to the ordinary man in the market place. He speaks the poor man's language, he appeals to their imagination. He is the bridge between the Pentecostal churches and the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

He has mastered the tricks, the rhetoric, the antics and the persona of the former, and he applies this with a touch of sassiness that is original. He urges members of his ministry to "Pray Until Something Happens" (PUSH). In an overtly religious and superstitious country like Nigeria, there is never a shortage of persons who are ready to push until the impossible happens.

He organizes vigils titled "E no dey again". That is precisely what the people want to hear. They want to hear that problems, disease, unemployment- "e no dey again!". Mbaka also has a Foundation, the Multi-Life Savers Foundation. Note the emphasis on the saving of lives! He pays hospital bills, he gives out cars, he builds houses for people, he pays school fees, he sponsors events.

He sings. He dances. He is not your typical Catholic priest. He is rich. He talks about assets. Other priests go to him for financial assistance. He is an all-round entrepreneur in church garments. His Ministry performs miracles, signs and wonders. He makes the lame walk, he opens the eyes of the blind, he cures diseases; he spreads wealth and opportunities. He creates jobs. He provides hope. With all this, Fr. Mbaka is far ahead of his bosses within the Catholic hierarchy. Persons of other faiths and Christian denominations troop to his Ministry to seek spiritual counseling. Politicians seek his endorsement.

He controls the mind of multitudes. The Catholic Church is probably in need of reinvention, and the seeds of that process may well lie in the example and eclecticism of Mbaka and his likes in other parts of the Catholic world.

The plain truth is that the average church-goer today is looking for something different which the orthodox churches and their mode of worship do not offer. The poor who make up the congregation are as impatient as the politicians who have made them poor. They want immediate salvation, practical solutions to their problems; they want their blessings here and now, not in a world to come. Mbaka and the Pentecostal pastors understand this and so they bring the church closer to the people's needs. But there is a flipside and it is hubris.

Hubris is risky and pernicious. It is what makes Fr. Mbaka appear so contradictory. It is what has distanced him from his original vows as a priest, making him talk of cash and assets as if he were an investor on Broad Street. It is what makes him complain of suffering and see his transfer as a punishment, rather than as an opportunity for further evangelism of The Word. He must have started out as a humble priest, but today, he has mastered the use of the media for self-projection and he is not contented with being a priest, he is now enjoying the life of a celebrity, hugging the limelight, seeking personal glory.

He runs a ministry of miracles, of wonders and signs and he sees visions of possible assassinations, either of himself or the politicians that he supports. No one should be surprised if this Pentecostal Catholic priest goes about with bodyguards. He shares this hubris with many other religious figures who seek to share power with politicians and co-govern Nigeria. They see visions about everything: from elections to diseases and foreign exchange rates. They have created a New Order under which they command the electorate, political parties and governments.

It is this hubris that has blinded Fr. Mbaka to the fact that the souls to be won for Christ are not only in GRA, Enugu, but in all places as well. His transfer to a smaller parish should remind him of the essence of his priestly vows: humility, simplicity, obedience, sacrifice, as well as commitment to the good of the church rather than individual heroism, values which can truly make him a priest in the Order of Melchizedek. Let him therefore, suffer if he must, and let his suffering be a blessing upon the poor and the Church, and if he as much as whimpers again, let him be posted post-haste to Sambisa forest, where the poor are in urgent need of miracles.

Ask Fayose to tell Nigerians which election result he was collating in Efon-Alaye, ‎APC tells Justice Minister

Against the backdrop of the revelations contained in a confessional televised statement by the embattled Ekiti State Secretary of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Tope Aluko, on Channels Television live programme on Sunday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has urged the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to prosecute all indicted people in the election rigging scandal and that he should ask Fayose to tell Nigerians which election result he was collating in Efon-Alaye on June 19, 2014.

The party said it had on two occasions petitioned the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice on the same matter, stressing that the latest revelations by PDP scribe had made it imperative that the nation's chief law officer must act now.
Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, noted in a statement on Monday that the election fraud crisis had refused to go despite all shenanigans by Governor Ayodele Fayose, who he said was the biggest beneficiary of the election fraud that had created blight on Nigeria's international image.

The APC spokesman said even though there was nothing new in the PDP's scribe's revelations, he noted, however, that it had become pertinent to prosecute the suspects as the revelations were again emanating from the insider who participated fully in what is now known as Ekitigate.

"By Aluko's revelations, we are justified in our claim that our candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi, never lost that election, but was criminally toppled by a coup d'etat orchestrated by Fayose in cahoots with President Goodluck Jonathan's administration that illegally deployed money and the military to ensure victory for Fayose.

"It is interesting that more names are coming up in the biggest election scam ever witnessed in Nigeria with the alleged participation of Ifeanyi Ubah of the infamous Transformation Agenda for Nigeria (TAN), a shadowy campaign group for former President Jonathan in the fraud. No wonder Ubah was compensated with a honorary Fellow by Fayose at the Ekiti State College of Education for a job well done.

"It is in the light of this that we are calling on the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to prosecute all the suspects in the election fraud for treasonable felony to preserve the integrity of the Nigerian Constitution," Olatunbosun said.

The APC said President Muhammadu Buhari should use Ekiti election fraud case to convince Nigerians that official impunity and fraud would not have a place in Nigeria under his watch.
"We have seen the Army already tackling the military aspect of the Army Probe Panel report. We expect the police and attorney general of the federation to also tow the line in coming out with the civilian component of the probe report and act accordingly.

"The military men were mere agents used by Fayose to rig the election. Some of the officers implicated in Fayose's crime had been recommended for various sanctions, including losing their jobs while others are to face prosecution by the EFCC and court martial, according to the military rules and administrative procedure.

"These military men should not be made to suffer alone for the crime committed in conjunction with Fayose and his fellow conspirators in PDP who are still working free as if there is no law in this country," he said.

Olatunbosun berated Fayose's media aides, Lanre Ogunsuyi and Lere Olayinka, for claiming that Captain Koli's audio tape was a forgery, saying, however, that it was gratifying that Fayose, who also first denied his voice on the tape, later admitted that the voice was his. If the Ekiti audio tape was a forgery as they alleged, were the appearances of Koli and Tope Aluko also forgeries?

Noting that Fayose had always mouthed his readiness to wave his immunity to face prosecution over alleged crimes, he said now was the time to wave that immunity to face prosecution on the electoral fraud.

He insisted that APC would not accept anything short of comprehensive review of Ekiti State election saga, even as he urged Nigerians to prevail on the Minister of Justice to compel Fayose to explain to the world what he meant by saying that he collected INEC soft copies and got them printed as captured in Captain Sagir Koli's tape detailing all activities connected with Ekiti poll rigging.

"Besides Fayose talking on the tape about how INEC gave him soft copies that he printed to win the election, the Minister of Justice must also compel the governor, who spoke on election result collation in the tape, to tell Nigerians which election result he was collating in Efon-Alaye on June 19, 2014, two clear days before the June 21, 2014 governorship election," Olatunbosun concluded.

PLUNGING NAIRA – BEFORE YOU BLAME EMEFIELE LOOK AT YOURSELF by Kenneth Ezag

It is either I do not understand economics and how exchange rates work or a vast majority of us Nigerians still don't get how we have wrecked our country with our own curious choices. Just this morning I was listening to the radio and the lady on air went on and on about how she thought CBN governor Godwin Emefiele was incompetent and should be sacked because the naira was now exchanging at 309 or so to the USD. That view pretty much echoes the sentiments expressed by many people I know and it amazes me that there are Nigerians who actually think there is some magic POLICY that can make the Naira strong in the near term. If my economics and my understanding of the way the world works are right, then that is as far from the truth as Jesus Christ is black.

The simple fact of the matter is that apart from oil that accounts for over 90% of our revenues, we really don't have much of an economy. We hardly produce anything, we import even toothpicks, so exactly what policy is going to be implemented that will turn Nigeria into a top exporting economy in the near term? Where are our Apples, IBMs, Disneys, GMs, General Electrics, Coca Colas, Empire State buildings, Statues of Liberties, Lockheeds, Citibanks, JP Morgans, ExxonMobils, NBAs, Super Bowls etc? Let me bring that closer home.

There was a time long ago when Nigeria had a truly strong economy and the naira was one to the dollar – even exchanged for higher than the USD, but that Nigeria is not this Nigeria. Sadly that Nigeria was laid by the British, and this Nigeria (if you don't believe in the nonsensical imperialist conspiracies like me) – fueled by the DAMAGING Indigenisation Decree, has been the creation of us Nigerians.Back then we had a booming economy.

We were either the top, or among the top exporters, of timbre, cocoa, groundnuts, rubber, palm oil, etc, in the world. Nigerians not only holidayed at home in their villages, at Yankari Games Reserve, at Obudu Cattle Ranch, at Oguta Lake, at Ikogosi springs, at Gurara Falls, at Mambilla Platueau, etc, we attracted international tourists who brought in loads of foreign exchange. Even Nigerian schools were foreign exchange earners because they attracted foreign students. We had different car assembly plants – Peugeot, Volkswagen, Anamco etc. Nigerian government officials only bought vehicles assembled in Nigeria for official cars. We had a thriving sports industry.

We were not Man United or Chelsea fans, we were Rangers or IICC fans. We had the Nduka Odizors, people made money from sports. We also had companies like Lennards and Bata producing school shoes in their thousands, we had the thriving Nigerian Airways and the Aviation School in the north that produced some of the best pilots in the world. In those days if you were brilliant you were respected much more than the crass money-miss-road contractors of today. Most of the Aje Butters I knew had fathers who were university dons. Back then it meant something to 'know book'. Our textile industry was alive and well.

Just recently I watched a news report on the textile industry in Nigeria on CCTV News. Though the main focus was on the comatose status of the industry, I was stunned by the gigantic Kaduna Textile Mill built in 1957. I could go on and on.
Today however, no thanks to our parents (and we must call them out the way Wole Soyinka did his generation) and many of us (and we should be remembered for failing our children if we continue like this), we have destroyed everything. Today for instance Nigerian football (which comes easy to me obviously) doesn't appeal to us, we have to fly across thousands of miles to watch 'our' clubs play. Every year we collectively burn billions of Naira being fans of clubs that give us nothing back, but some 'entertainment value' – simple pleasures for which we are ready to destroy the future of our children. Well people, payback time is here. Even with our ta-she-re money we all want to wear designer clothes and carry designer bags, Armani, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton etc.

We all want to drive jeeps with American specs, our children must now school overseas and acquire the necessary accents to come back home and bamboozle their 'bush and crass' contemporaries that they left behind. Who holidays in Nigeria anymore, is there Disneyland here? No one buys made-in-Nigeria school bags for their children, after all no Superman or Incredible Hulk or Cinderella on them.

We are no longer top exporters of anything and the demise of oil means we have zilch… zero. A country of 170m fashion-conscious people has no textile industry. We take delight in showing how our made-in-Switzerland Aso Ebi is different class to everyone else's. When we help our musicians grow and pay them millions, they repay us by immediately shipping the monies overseas to produce their "i-don-dey-different-level"music videos. It makes no difference that distinctly Zulu dancers are dancing to a Nigerian highlife song. As stars concerned they also wed and holiday overseas to impress us all. All the musicians who acknowledge their Ajegunle roots now speak in a cocktail of strange accents to symbolise how much they have blown their monies overseas.

Were we a more serious people, the highly popular Kingsway Stores of the past would probably have a thousand outlets pan Nigeria today supporting a massive agriculture industry among others, but today we have the likes of SPAR, Shoprite, dominating the retail industry while Kingsway is dead. And we Nigerians make it a special point to shop from the Oyinbos who have 'cleaner shops', 'better this and better that'. For our personal pleasure we don't mind them dominating us in our own backyard and shipping proceeds overseas.

I could go on and on, but I don tire. Even as you are reading this, stop for a moment and look around you. What you see will probably explain why we are lucky it is not N1000 to the USD yet. And don't think for a moment that it cannot get there. Just continue to wear your Armani gear and Swiss-made lace, continue to spend your money on Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Barca and encourage your children to do same. (My article tomorrow in my Saturday column in This Day is on the Nigerian champions Enyimba FC – Nigeria's most successful club – not having a sponsor, yet Nigerian brands pay over N600m to Man United and Arsenal for sponsorship to impress us.) Ehhh, no problem, continue to tell me the NPFL is rubbish or the clubs should clean up their act if they want sponsorship, mo gbo . Don't curtail your interest in choice wines ( we were the number one champagne consumers in the world in 2015), continue to love your American specs, cheer the education ministry for letting schools sink to pitiable levels, don't fight them to improve our schools, don't chide them for letting schools drop Nigerian history and embrace British, America and whatever else curricula.

Carry on with your love of French wines and Chinese silk, don't bother about Jamiu Alli when there is Roger Federer. Stock up on your Italian, American, British products which you cannot live without, including the 'baby soft' toilet rolls produced only in that small unique village in England – the days are long gone since you were a broke student who used wet newspapers to wipe your butt. Don't even consider holidaying in Nigeria, it's too dangerous – you have to fulfill your dream of being Nigeria's Henry Ford. Don't listen to people like me who have a wardrobe full of only cheap adire that is actually cheaper than just one of your Tom Ford blazers. Please keep dressing in fine silk made in some exotic place so you can be addressed accordingly.

Finally keep letting corrupt leaders who have looted your commonwealth and shipped all the monies overseas get away because to attack them does not fit your political narrative. Let us continue with the fine life, let us all continue to work for Oyinbo. But don't forget that there is payback time and Emefiele is not your problem. Time for us all to look in the mirror and take responsibility.

President Buhari is engaging in political persecution in his bid to weaken opposition – Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to respect the democratic principles of separation of powers by allowing the judiciary to do its job in proper prosecution of people accused of corruption
Fayose urged the President to stop castigating the judiciary and making the arm of government to appear as the stumbling block in his fight against corruption.

In a statement on Monday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose also urged the President to tell Nigerians the truth about the Boko Haram insurgency, saying, "They keep telling us that they have defeated Boko Haram technically while Nigerians are still being killed daily by Boko Haram, with over 100 people killed in Dalori, less than 12km to Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
"Isn't it now necessary for the President to fulfill his promise of leading from the front and getting his Information Minister, Lai Mohammed to go and hold a press briefing in Sambisa forest unguarded by military men so as to show to Nigerians that indeed, they have defeated Boko Haram technically?"

Fayose said President Buhari should have simply told the whole world that he hated the Nigeria Judiciary because he lost the petitions that he filed against his electoral defeats in 2003, 2007 and 2011, instead of hiding under the fight against corruption to ventilate his anger.
The governor, who said there was nothing wrong with the legal system in Nigeria, added that "in recent times, politicians like President Buhari are the ones responsible for the rot in the judiciary because of their desperation to use the courts to foist one party state on Nigerians with conflicting judgments from election tribunals."

He said making noise in the media about discovery of fraud was different from being able to prove allegations of fraud in the court, adding that

"The President and his men should stop the media trial and playing with bogus figures. This is because as it is today, President Buhari is not fighting any corruption. Rather, he is engaging in political persecution in his bid to weaken opposition both in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and within his own party, the All Progressives Congress (APC)."

"Even the president's party men are beginning to condemn openly the trial of people accused of corruption in the media, with newspapers quoting Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) on Saturday as describing it as convicting the suspects without giving them fair hearing.

"When your own men are corrupting an institution like the judiciary just because they needed to win back states like Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Taraba and others that they lost at the polls, thereby causing the courts to give conflicting judgments, it is morally wrong for you to go outside the country and complain about such a judiciary.

"When your party men are encouraging people to commit perjury and confess to rigging elections just to discredit electoral victories of PDP and those made to confess to committing these crimes are allowed to walk the streets free just because they are serving the interest of APC, such a president lacks moral rights to complain about any institution stalling his fight against corruption because his own party men are number one promoters of corruption.

"The President must therefore act like a democratically elected president that he is by respecting the judiciary, which is a separate arm of government before his complain about the role of the judiciary in his fight against corruption can be taking seriously," the statement read.

#EkitiGate Channels TV Staff Helped Tope Aluko Escape DSS Arrest

Tope Aluko, the man who confessed live on Channels TV, yesterday, narrowly escaped arrest by officials of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) who stormed the Channels studio office on Sunday night.

Mr. Aluko, a member of the Ekit state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), until his recent suspension, on Sunday night appeared on Politics Today, a live TV programme on Channels Television where he gave a breakdown of how the Ekiti State governorship election was rigged in favour Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Mr Aluko "confessed" that the Ekiti state election was rigged despite having testified at a lower Tribunal that the election was not rigged.

"There was a strike team, a mixture of the DSS, military, the mobile police… that is about all, to take out APC leaders, making them incommunicado with their members", Aluko said on Channels.

"Before the primaries, His Excellency, Ayodele Fayose, said that we can only win using the military.

"Then we came up with a plan about May.

Mr Aluko disclosed that he had to confess because Fayose promised to appoint him Chief of Staff and Honourable Femi Bamisile the Deputy Governor, but Fayose then went on to betray him.

In the course of the TV programme, operatives of the DSS stormed the Channels TV studio.

Initially, it was not clear why they came but a source who witnessed the scene revealed they came searching for Aluko.

Further investigations on Monday revealed that the DSS operatives had arrived the Channels TV headquarters to effect the arrest of Mr. Aluko over the damning allegations he made in the course of the programme.

A Channels TV staff who did not want to be named said; "They came to arrest Aluko but we told them he had left the building. So they drove into the night possibly to track him down. After they had left, we had to secretly smuggle him out of the building in disguise", the source disclosed.

Meanwhile, Governor Fayose's media aide, Lere Olayinka, in his response to Aluko opined that the "confesser" "is a person of unstable character who can sell his mother if offered enough money"..

He further disclosed that Mr Aluko had been involved in different crimes, ranging from admission racketeering, sex-for-marks and issuance of certificates to students as a lecturer.

Why We Transferred Father Mbaka — Catholic Church

The Catholic Church on Monday clarified the recent transfer of Father Ejike Mbaka, saying the controversial priest was merely being sent to where he would be more useful to the church.

In its first reaction since the controversy over the transfer broke, the church said the posting was not meant to be punitive.

In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES Monday, the Secretary-General of the Catholic Secretar‎iat of Nigeria, Reverend Father Ralph Madu said the transfer of priests within the catholic church is a "normal church procedure."

"Mbaka's own is not an exception," Mr. Madu said. "The Bishop has the right to post any priest wherever he feels his service would be more useful to the church."

Public criticisms had greeted the Enugu Diocese's recent decision to transfer Mr. Mbaka out of Christ the King Parish‎, GRA, where he had served for over a decade and had established a popular prayer ministry, the Adoration Prayer Ministry.
Mr. Mbaka is to resume immediately at his new post at the Our Lady Parish, Emene.

The priest, who is as fiery as he is controversial, had described his ‎re-posting by the church as a "calculated move" to make him suffer.

"I know we are going to suffer within now and few months to come," the priest said. I am going to suffer and suffer; I know that. I'm going to suffer because I have no place to put my head. I am going to suffer because I have no place to keep the Adoration Ministry's assets. I know I'm going to suffer."

On Sunday, the South-East zone of the All Progressives Congress alleged that Bishop Callistus Onaga was manipulated by external forces into effecting Mr. Mbaka's transfer.

"As a party, we have watched with concern and trepidation the criticism, the attack, assault and unpleasant comments hurled against Fr. Mbaka since he providentially prophesied that President Buhari would win the 2015 elections," the APC said in a statement by Osita Okechukwu, Spokesperson of its South-East caucus.

"Even the church did not spare him; he was called unprintable names, yet his prophecy came true."

In the run-up to last year's presidential election, Mr. Mbaka had told a gathering of thousands of catholic faithfuls at his Adoration Prayer Ground ministry to vote out then president, Goodluck Jonathan.

The priest, renowned for his blunt sermons, has a huge followership in‎ South East Nigeria, where thousands of Catholics throng to his prayer ground for healing and miracles.

But following his recent transfer to a new parish, speculations were rife that his being moved to another parish was punishment for his unalloyed support of a Muslim candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, over his Christian predecessor, Mr. Jonathan.

But Mr. Madu told PREMIUM TIMES that "such frivolities ‎have nothing to do with the posting."

"His posting should have been a privilege, not a punishment – which the Bishop can do because he has the power.

"If he (Mbaka) says it's a punishment, then it's open for further investigation. Posting is a regular thing, a priest can be transferred after two, three, four, or more years, it depends on the discretion of the Bishop.

"That ministry (Adoration Ministry) is his private ministry; it does not belong to the church. Overseeing a parish is a full-time job. Overseeing a ministry is a bigger task. If the church decides to take him somewhere where he'll have more time to carry out his ministry, how is it punitive? That should not be the language."

Mr. Madu said Mr. Mbaka had done things that were unacceptable to the church in the past but received no punishments for them.

"He is supposed to be a missionary," Mr. Madu said. "What if the Bishop had closed down the ministry‎, which is within his power to do? Sometimes, transfers can be for the good of the priest as something can be going wrong which he might not be aware of. The Bishop is free to move any priest at any time; it is his prerogative.

Fight Against Corruption: Judiciary is my main headache – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, said ongoing fight against corruption in Nigeria could be effectively tackled with the strong support of the judiciary.

A statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the president's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said that Buhari stated this while speaking at a town hall meeting with Nigerians living in Ethiopia.

The president said that far-reaching reforms of the judiciary remained a key priority for his administration.

"On the fight against corruption vis-à-vis the judiciary, Nigerians will be right to say that is my main headache for now.

"If you reflect on what I went through for twelve years when I wanted to be the president, I attempted three times.

''At the fourth attempt, through God and the use of technology, it was possible for Nigerians to elect an APC candidate as president.

"In my first attempt in 2003, I ended up at the Supreme Court and for 13 months I was in court.

"The second attempt in 2007, I was in court close to 20 months, and in 2011, my third attempt, I was also in court for nine months.

"All these cases went up to the Supreme Court until the fourth time in 2015, when God agreed that I will be President of Nigeria,'' he said.

Buhari assured members of the Nigerian community in Ethiopia that with the support of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, he would continue to do his best to improve the nation's judicial administration system.

On urban development and infrastructure, he announced that the Federal Government had ordered a review of several railway transport projects signed by the previous administration with the Chinese government.

"The Chinese government was very generous to Nigeria on the projects signed with the previous government because they agreed to pay 85 per cent of the project.

"But, the Nigerian government was unable to meet up with its counterpart funding of 15 per cent, so the Chinese government was unable to make any impact on the project,'' he said.

The president said he had directed the Ministers of Transportation, Finance, and Power, Works and Housing, to revisit the agreements and explore ways of re-approaching the Chinese government for assistance.

He added that the Chinese government had indicated interest to assist Nigeria on project financing through its Export-Import Bank.

On the proposed N6.07 trillion 2016 budget before the National Assembly, the president said that for the first time in Nigeria, the budget would be largely financed from non-oil revenue.

He identified the collapse of the international oil market and oil theft in the Niger Delta as main reasons for projecting more revenues to fund the budget from the non-oil sector.

He said that theft of oil by some Nigerians who felt that the oil belonged to them was irritating to ''those of us who participated in the civil war for 30 months in which at least two million Nigerians were killed.''

Buhari explained that the proposed budget would focus on increasing efficiency and transparency in government operations and the blocking of leakages from revenue generating agencies.

He added that the recovered assets of the country would also be used to reduce the budget deficit.

It is Irritating for Niger Deltans to Lay Claim to the Oil in Their Community - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed disgust at Nigerians who lay claim to the oil found in their communities.

According to PUNCH, the President said those of them, who participated in the nation's 30-month civil war that left millions of Nigerians dead, found the belief of Nigerians, who lived in oil-rich areas that the natural resources belonged to them, very irritating.

Addressing Nigerians in Addis Ababa at a town hall meeting President Buhari said, "The theft of oil by some Nigerians that happen to live there, who feel that the oil belongs to them and not the country, is an irritating thing for those of us, who participated in the civil war for 30 months in which at least two million Nigerians were killed''.

Boko Haram terrorists returning to embarrass my government - Buhari cries out

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday raised the alarm that having lost the war to the nation's armed forces, insurgents are desperately seeking ways of returning to the society to wreak havoc.

Buhari therefore called on all Nigerians, especially those that are resident in areas previously ravaged by terrorists, to be more vigilant and ready to work with security operatives in ending the war against insurgency.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President made the submission while reacting to the spate of suicide bombings in Chibok market, Dolari Internally Displaced Person's camp in Borno State and the Gombi market in Adamawa State.

He said the insurgents' gradual return was meant to embarrass his government and that was why they chose isolated communities and markets as their targets.

He said the insurgents had suffered immensely from the sustained bombardments of their camps and hide outs by the Nigerian military and had resorted to using desperate measures to gain cheap media attention.

The President added that the terrorists had been rendered weak, confused and homeless after repeated bombings and ravaging of their camps and hide outs by the military, forcing them to find their way back into the society to wreak havoc, like the case of the Dolari IDP camp.

He said, "I urge all citizens wherever they live to own the war against terror and to be part of the fight because it is the only way we can finish the remaining work that needs to be done to make our country safe again.

"Having lost the war, they (the insurgents) are seeking ways and means to gradually find their way back into society.

"They are not returning to contribute but to cause more havoc. They are so desperate to embarrass the government and the people that they have no qualms attacking isolated communities and markets."
Buhari noted that the materials for the Improvised Explosive Devices were locally sourced by the insurgents.

He therefore urged Nigerians to be more circumspect and report suspicious purchases and movements of unusual components in any part of the country, especially the North East.

The President extended his condolences to all the people of Chibok, Gombi and Dolari who lost loved ones in the recent attacks and prayed that the Almighty God will comfort them and grant the injured persons quick recovery

PDP secretary reveals how Fayose was rigged into power

– PDP scribe says former president Goodluck Jonathan gave Fayose $37 million cash to prosecute election

– Says Fayose betrayed him

– Speaks also on how Dikko was replaced for not 'cooperating'

Stunning revelations have emerged on how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rigged Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state into power in the state.

Leadership reports that the secretary of the state's PDP, Dr Temitope Aluko opened a can of worms on the saga, where he also gave an insider account of how the military was used to rig the 2014 Ekiti state gubernatorial poll in the state.

Aluko, the chief returning officer who signed the results for the election, also disclosed how former president, Goodluck Jonathan gave Fayose $37 million cash to prosecute the governorship election.

Aluko who spoke in Abuja, noted that he was forced to come forward with the revelations because he was betrayed by Fayose.

He informed that he was part of Fayose's inner cycle during the election, while alleging that Jonathan initially gave the governor a first tranche of $2 million in March 2014 for the primary election, adding that this cash was collected at the NNPC headquarters in Abuja and was taken to Fayose's private house in Abuja before it was shipped to Ekiti.

He said: "Immediately after the primary election, we collected. another $35 million from Jonathan on June 17, 2014. The money was brought to us by the former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.

"We all assembled at the front office of Spotless Hotel, Ado Ekiti, owned by Fayose. Thereafter, the cash was taken to a Bureau De Change in Onitsha where it was converted to N4.7 billion."

He alleged further that the governor got about N3 billion cash from Senator Buruji Kashamu in 2013 for revive the PDP in Ekiti State while also giving account on how the military was used to win the election.

"The former President agreed with Fayose and summoned a security meeting at the Presidential Villa for the purpose of the election.

"Those at the meeting were the former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh; then Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Kenneth Minimmah; and former National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu.

"Others included Fayose, Senator Iyiola Omisore, then Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan and Obanikoro.

"At that meeting, the former President made it clear to the ex Chief of Defence Staff that Fayose would stand for him (as Commander-In-Chief) in terms of providing security for the election," Aluko explained further.

Confessing further, Aluko alleged that Fayose, who banked on Jonathan's directive, had approached the former Commander of the Army Brigade in Akure, Brigadier General Dikko to handle the election for the PDP.

"But Gen. Dikko did not give us audience. He stated bluntly that he would not be available for such operation. So Fayose sponsored a petition against him which led to his replacement with Brig. Gen. Aliyu Momoh who was amenable to our plans," the PDP scribe said, adding that it led to his replacement.

He explained also that a total of 64 PDP stalwarts, who had knowledge of their local governors, were selected to supply information on opposition members.

Aluko said: "They gave detailed information regarding names and locations of opposition members in all the local governments, the various routes, areas of strength and weaknesses of the PDP in the 16 local governments.

"Today, most of these 64 hatchet men are members of the Senate, House of Representatives, state House of Assembly, commissioners, local government chairmen, special advisers and the rest.

"We went into the election with 1040 recognised soldiers and another batch of 400 unrecognised soldiers brought from Enugu by Sen. Andy Uba.

"In addition, we raised 44 special strike teams brought in Toyota Hilux buses from Abuja and Onistah. We made special stickers for the vehicles that conveyed members of the strike team and black hand bands for each of them.

"Each strike team was made up of 10 members headed by a soldier and comprising soldiers, policemen, DSS operatives and Civil Defence corps. They were detailed to attack and arrest prominent APC chieftains in all the local governments.

"We set up anchorage, mainly residential houses, in every local government where the strike team members collected their welfare and other allowances.

"To encourage the strike team members, we gave them orders to share money and other valuables they could lay their hands on in the houses of APC chieftains they raided.

"Then we set up detention camps, mainly in primary schools where most of the APC chieftains were detained. Others were detained in police stations where the DPOs were friendly with us. We let them off after the election was over.

"A day to the election, we used the military to block all routes in the local governments and prevented APC chieftains, including former Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi from coming into Ekiti.

"So we ensured that no APC chieftain was insight on election. We provided polling agents for the APC in most of the polling units so we had no problem getting them to sign election results in the units.

"All these local and foreign observers that described the election free and fair only witnessed the voting exercise on election day without knowing what transpired before the voting."

Speaking on why he is making the revelations now, Aluko stated: "Before the election, Fayose, Femi Bamishile and I jointly swore with the Holy Bible on a sharing formula after we must have won the election. We agreed that Fayose would be governor, Bamishile his deputy and I Chief of Staff.

"But the moment he got into office, Fayose reneged on the agreement and left me in the lurch. More worrisome is the fact that Fayose has derailed from the original Ekiti project we envisaged."

Only a few days ago, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state alleged that Fayose was suffering from psychological stress which prompted him to make seditious remarks threatening to bring down President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.

The APC, which was reacting to a threat issued by Governor Fayose over the weekend to bring down President Buhari's administration if anything happened to him, following the release of military panel report on Ekiti governorship polls, implored Nigerians to ignore the governor's perceived seditious remarks.

A Reminder To Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo Of COZA Ministries To Publish His Robust Reply By Ijabla Raymond

Dear Pastor Fatoyinbo: It is almost two and half years since a female member of your church alleged that you had been sleeping with her. You had almost immediately promised a "robust reply soon" but there has been no response at all from you let alone a robust one. No reasonable person expects you or any pastor to be a saint but as a leader and role model, and someone who occupies a position of trust, people expect accountability from you.

There is a lot wrong with the church in Nigeria today - Pentecostal pastors are in competition with themselves to accumulate wealth from the tithes and offering of their members; some will stop at nothing to exploit the desperate situations of our people to enrich themselves including making bogus claims about faith healing, paying dodgy characters to fake miracles on stage, making fuzzy pronouncements which they call prophecies, giving patients false reassurances and encouraging them to stop taking their medications with devastating consequences; some pastors own private jets bought with the tithes of their members some of whom cannot even feed their families; many of them sleep with their vulnerable female members who come to them for help. A medical doctor would lose their licence to practise or could even get jailed if they did that to their patient, but somehow our society has different standards for religious institutions and their leaders. Pastors have god-like statures and a cult-like following, which can overwhelm their naive members; and this often stops members from speaking out against sexual or psychological abuse. One thing we can learn from history is that when accountability is lacking, then a culture of abuse, corruption and exploitation becomes entrenched in a society and its institutions e.g. the sexual abuse of teenage boys by Catholic priests.

This is not an attack on your person or morality. Personally, I am not convinced that religion makes people good; indeed, believers are guilty of every sin that their holy books accuse unbelievers of. This is about accountability, a quality that is grossly lacking in Nigerian society. It is the reason there is a church on practically every street but our country consistently tops the list of the most corrupt nations of the world. How can influential pastors like you speak truth to power or rebuke our corrupt government officials and politicians if they themselves are unaccountable?

It is time to walk the talk and live by what you preach. In the name of the God you worship and on whose behalf you claim to speak, I urge you to honour your promise and publish your robust reply now. I have refrained from discussing the online abuses, aggressions and psychological trauma that Miss Walters was subjected to by many of your admirers and supporters who naturally assumed that being a woman she was lying against you, a man of God who can do no wrong. You need to set the record straight - a good name is better than riches. You owe this to yourself, your family, your church members, all those who look up to you, and the society in general. To whom much is given, much is also expected.

Yours truly,

Ijabla Raymond

I am going to suffer and suffer, says Father Mbaka

Controversial Catholic priest, Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka has stated that he is going to "suffer and suffer" after he was posted from Christ The King Parish in Enugu to a new duty post at Our Lady Parish, Umuchigbo, Njinike, four hours away from his old parish.

Mbaka who transferred to his new station on Saturday was accompanied by hundreds of his parishioners, admirers and well wishers. "I know we are going to suffer between now and a few months to come. I am going to suffer and suffer. I know that.

Mbaka and his followers in the Adorations Ministry strongly believes that that his posting is a 'witch hunt'.

"I'm going to suffer because I have no place to put my head. I am going to suffer because I have no place to keep the Adoration Ministry's assets.

"I know I'm going to suffer. Fortunately, it is going to happen in the month of lent. So, I am going to use my exit here as a Lenten observance but Jesus said it all in John 16:20 to his apostles that you will be sorrowful and the world will be rejoicing but very soon I will turn your sorrow to joy.

Mbaka, having consoled himself hoped that things will get better sooner rather than later. "But for now I know you are going to suffer. The Adoration Ministry is passing through suffering right now even though I've accepted that is the will of God. Is the will of God through suffering? It is a mega suffering

"The quantum of the assets of the Adoration Ministry is the only thing I am bothered about for now.

"Where am I going to keep them? I am going to stay in one small room that has only one small bed, one small table, little toilet and bathroom. So where am I going to keep all the adoration assets?

"My clothing and books I can keep in the car or somebody's house but where will I keep these assets that I have given to the Catholic church of Enugu?

"But I say may God take the glory and whoever that has offended me, I have forgiven.

"I won't fight anybody or even dream of battling anybody. If anybody allows the devil to use him, the same that advised you to make a mistake will laugh at you when you cry over the error. The baby is born, there is no going back.

"We are moving out. We have been doing it and we will do it again. Moses was going out with a rod in his hand, Mbaka is moving out with his Bible and this nobody can take away from me."

"I am giving God the glory and I welcome the church's choice and action with absolute acceptance and obedience.

"So there is no negation to what God has approved and what the church suggested. Nobody should see me as a recalcitrant priest. I am not.

"I have taken an oath of obedience and I stand on it. I pray God to bless all of you who in one way or the other have supported the work of God here and those who have sincerely allowed God to use him or her for the work we did here all these years.

"God will bless the people of God here and reward you according

to your labour. The parish is not going to collapse; the church will continue to grow."

"God has planned a future and hope out of disaster and where I am going. He will go before me to level mountains.

"The Bible says that He will deliver me from all evil; He will keep my going out and coming in both now and forever… I am praying that God will keep his church and my fellow adorers so that our journey to Umuchigbo will be a journeyof Israelites out of Egypt.

"Some of them were grumbling leaving Egyptian soil because they were having the phobia for the unknown but

I am telling you people as a courageous leader, do not be afraid.

"We are moving and in not distant time, you people are going to smile."

"The only time they every reached out to me was on November 30… when the chairman of our party announced the decision of the National Working Committee to all of us to say the NWC had adopted Alhaji Yahaya Bello as the governorship candidate for the December 5 suplementary election.

"Thereafter, there was no consultation until today. I want to make it clear that the party chairman, Chief John Oyegun, that we saw as a father has decided to champion a cause that is anti-people. That is why we were not invited (for the inauguration)."

#Dasukigate: Obanikoro responds to EFCC probe of sons over alleged N4.8billion fraudulent payment

The immediate past Minister of State, Foreign Affairs Musiliu Obanikoro has challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to sincerely publish the names of the directors and signatories to the Sylvan McNamara Limited account that allegedly received N4.8billion from the office of the National Security Adviser.
In a statement circulated on his behalf by his media aide, Jonathan Eze, Mr. Obanikoro said the EFCC should provide details of the real signatories to the account "as at when the said money was paid instead of demonising and deceiving Nigerians with vague, contrived and distorted information".

"Obanikoro is appalled by the public political persecution embarked upon by these agencies noting that there is nowhere in the world where investigations are being conducted using the pages of the newspapers," the statement said.

The former minister also "queried the wisdom and logic of bandying figures and associating same with his sons who are thorough bred professionals in their own rights reminding them that the court of law is and remains the judicial institution for trying cases and not whipping sentiments in order to give the dog a bad name and hang it."

Saying he served the nation in various capacities with enviable and untainted records of public service, Mr. Obanikoro urged the EFCC to be straight and above board in its investigations and avoid speculations and conjectures that are infringing on the fundamental human rights of his sons.

The statement reads in parts, "Associating my sons to the Sylvan McNamara account that allegedly received funds from the office of the embattled National security Adviser is highly preposterous and unthinkable.

"I am particularly amazed by the fact that trials and investigations are being done using the media unconventionally just to satisfy the cravings of political entities who are desperate to rub my hard earned reputation in the mud.

"I am using this medium to challenge … the EFCC to publish in good conscience the signatories and the names of the directors of the said company and to restate that I shall conclusively pursue this injustice and infringements to a logical end."

The former minister also attacked news website, SaharaReporters, for publishing the report indicating that an account linked to his sons received funds from the NSA office, although other news platform, including PREMIUM TIMES, also published the reports.

Reports Saturday had indicated that two sons of the former minister Babajide and Gbolahan Obanikoro, were on the radar of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after about N4.75billion was traced to a company, Sylvan McNamara Limited, in which the two men have interest.

Operatives believe the investigation might lead to the invitation of former Minister Obanikoro himself.

The politician is currently in the United States where he is said to be schooling.

The money was allegedly paid in several tranches into the company's account number 0026223714 with Diamond bank from the Office of the National Security Adviser account with the CBN.
According to the source, all the transfers were effected between June and December 2014, a period that coincided with the preparation for and the conduct of the Ekiti state gubernatorial election which ushered in the current administration of Governor Ayodele Fayose.
For instance N200m was transferred into Sylvan Mc Namara's account on June 5, 2015, while N2billion was also wired into the account from the CBN/ Imprest Main account on June 16, 2015.
Another transfer of N700million hit the account on July 7, 2014, while N1billion was credited to the account on July 30, 2014.
Other transfers included N160m on August 8, 2014; N225m on August 22, 2014; N200m on November 14, 2014 and N200m on December 5, 2014.

Both Gbolahan and Babajide Obanikoro, sources disclosed, as directors of the company, were also signatories to its account until 2014 when one Olalekan Ogunseye was made sole signatory to the account.

EFCC sources disclosed that the payments to the company from the office of the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, were made without any contract.

Mr. Dasuki is being prosecuted for allegedly mismanaging $2.1billion meant for arms procurement to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-west region of Nigeria.

Ibeshe Boat Mishap: Lagos Vows to Clamp Down on Substandard Vessels

…Summons Emergency Meeting With Boat Operators

Following the unfortunate boat incident that occurred on Saturday, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has summoned an emergency meeting with all commercial boat operators in the state on Tuesday, February 2, just as it vowed to clamp down on boat operators who continue to contravene the rules and regulations guiding their operations.

In a statement signed by the Managing Director of LASWA, Mrs. Abisola Kamson, the meeting which will focus on the compliance of safety standards of vessels operating on the state waterways will hold at the LASWA office in Falomo Ikoyi by 9:30am.

"Despite efforts by the State Government to enforce the safety standards on the waterways, some boat operators still flout the rules and regulations thereby putting the lives of innocent citizens at risk".

"The Lagos State Government will not tolerate the operation of substandard vessels on the waterways. Any individual or corporate entity found to be operating vessels not deemed water worthy will be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law," she said.

Kamson who confirmed the boat mishap at Ibeshe, Ikorodu said the incident occurred at approximately 10:20am on a boat, Amen Limited, of Aki Marine Company belonging to one Mr. Akeem Balogun, which was travelling from Ijede to Badore East.

She said although all passengers on the boat were wearing their life jackets, the covered design of the boat made rescue efforts challenging.

Kamson said that survivors rescued were immediately taken to the Ijede General Hospital for treatment, while investigations are ongoing in collaboration with the Marine Police.

The LASWA boss who was at the scene of the incident reaffirmed the State Government's commitment to ensuring all operators plying the Lagos waterways comply with safety standards to prevent future loss of life and property.

I was not sacked by Supreme Court – Oduah

Sen. Stella Oduah On Friday in Abuja, described as "a misinterpretation", media reports which quoted a Supreme Court judgment to have sacked her and other federal lawmakers from Anambra.

Reports in the media said that the apex court had ordered the replacement of Oduah and other federal lawmakers from the state saying that their nomination to contest in the 2015 election was wrong.

In a statement issued by Cynthia Ferdinand, Press Secretary to the Senator, Oduah said that the report in the media was misleading as the apex court did not order the withdrawal of her certificate of return.

She said that the judgement of the Supreme Court said that it was only the National Executive Council of a political party that had the legal right to sponsor candidates in an election.

Oduah, therefore, stressed that she and all the other lawmakers from Anambra state have not been sacked by the Supreme Court contrary to media reports.

‎"It is pertinent to note that this is a mere misinterpretation of the Supreme Court rulings and‎ should be disregarded in all entirety‎.

"The Supreme Court did not order the withdrawal of the Certificates of Return issued by the Commission.

"It did not hold that the faction of the PDP had the right to sponsor candidates for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"It did not equally authorise the Commission to substitute our clients with the individuals whose names were on the list improperly allowed by the Commission,

"Series of judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria states that it is only the National Executive of the party that has the vires to sponsor candidates," she said.

Meanwhile, the solicitors to the nine lawmakers allegedly sacked, have written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to also fall into the folly of misunderstanding the judgment.

The letter signed by the lawmakers urged the commission not to allow itself to be misled by its legal department just as it was initially misled to accepting the list presented by the state chapter of the party.

The lawmakers stressed that separate rulings of the Supreme Court including that of Jan. 29, upheld that only the list submitted by the National Executive Committee was valid.

"This correspondence is aimed at setting the record straight so that your good self will not again be misled by your legal department into unjustifiably occasioning an unnecessary confusion in the process.

The letter also drew the attention of INEC to pages 4647 and 48 of the judgment of the Supreme Court to further buttress the point that the courtdid not sack their clients.

The solicitors stated further that the apex court did not authorise the Commission to substitute the lawmakers' names with the individuals whose names were on the list improperly allowed by the Commission.

NAN reports that the media was awash with reports that the Supreme Court had sacked the nine remaining lawmakers from Anambra state. (NAN)

“Okonjo-Iweala Did Not Serve Nigeria ‘selflessly’… She Was Paid In Dollars” – Falana Replies

Fiery Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana, on Wednesday, reacted to the rejoinder by Nigeria's former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who described as malicious his (Falana's) application to the Special Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) over her role in the alleged $2.1 billion arms scandal.

Falana had written the International Criminal Court, ICC, asking it to investigate those allegedly involved in the arms deal, including Okonjo-Iweala.

According to Falana, Okonjo-Iweala's claim not to have anything to do with the arms procurement scandal is fallacious.

In a rejoinder on Monday, Media Assistant to the former minister, Mr. Paul Nwabuiku, in a statement said: "The malicious attempt by Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana to mix Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala up in issues that have nothing to do with her in his letter to the International Criminal Court, ICC, is a desperate joke by an integrity-challenged charlatan. This misadventure shows that the so-called learned lawyer does not have any idea of what the mandate of the ICC is about."

However, firing back at Okonjo-Iweala, Falana said: "In my application to the Special Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) last week, I requested for investigation into the allegations of crimes against humanity committed by serving and retired military officers and their civilian accomplices. Having diverted over $8 billion earmarked for the procurement of arms and armament for counter insurgency operations, I argued that the suspects who aided and abetted the dreaded Boko Haram sect in the barbaric killing of over 25 soldiers and civilians including children and the displacement of 2 million people ought to be prosecuted at the ICC. However, for having the temerity to request the ICC to investigate the crimes against humanity committed by some former public officers who bear full responsibility for the atrocities perpetrated by the terrorist group Dr. Okonjo-Iweala resorted to the scurrilous attack of my person.

"Her baseless attack is not unusual as she is always quick to deflect criticisms by accusing anyone seeking to hold her to account for her appalling records in government of ulterior political motives. When Professor Chukwuma Soludo alleged that about N30 trillion could not be accounted for under her watch he was described as "an embittered loser in the Nigerian political space."

"When Comrade Adams Oshiomole questioned the illegal withdrawal of $2 billion from the Excess Crude Account, he was accused of having animus towards her because she had blocked Edo State from obtaining a loan. Therefore, instead of exchanging vulgar abuse with the former Minister, I shall respond to the diversionary allegations which lacerated her response and the attempt to extricate herself from the mass looting of the commonwealth under her watch."

Continuing, he said: "The claim that I am unfamiliar with the mandate of the ICC shows that Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala has not been following the practice of the court and its active and robust approach to its mandates, in particular with regard to the investigation of crimes in Darfur, the warrant of arrest for Joseph Kony (Uganda), and the warrant of arrest for Ahmad Harun, (Sudan). In many decided cases, the ICC has expanded its mandate to humanitarian issues, aimed at forestalling and impeding the perpetration of crimes which cause gross human rights abuse.

"There is absolutely nothing in the Rome Statute of the ICC to suggest that the court cannot address impunity for enormous financial crimes (and its crippling impact) which took place while Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala was the Finance Minister and the Coordinating Minister of the economy.

"Dr. Okonjo-Iweala's claim that I own the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) is far-fetched and laughable. A simple google search would have shown her that while I am one of the legal advisers of the organization, there are other very distinguished lawyers and academics of international repute on SERAP's board. Her claim that SERAP is 'discredit' is the exact opposite of reckless characterization because it is an organization that has won national and international recognitions—including nomination for the UN civil society award; the Ford Foundation Jubilee Transparency Award; and the Wole Soyinka Anti-Corruption Defender Award.

"Dr. Okonjo-Iweala also claimed that my petition against her to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) "were lacking in credibility", without any substantiation of what this means or specific rebuttal of the allegations contained in that petition. She has however not denied the accuracy of the claims in my petition. Whereas the former Finance Minister had insisted that only $500 million was recovered from the Abacha loot my petition detailed the recovery of $4 billion. As she could not challenge my claim Dr. Okonjo-Iweala now says that the $500 million was the amount recovered while she was the Minister of Finance under President Obasanjo.

"In making that claim she did not take cognizance of her recent statement that while she gave out $322 million to Col. Dasuki the sum of $700 million had been set aside for development. From her own account, over $1 billion was recovered from the loot under the Jonathan regime when she was coordinating the economy.

"Dr. Okonjo-Iweala should have also provided further explanations as to why a substantial part of the Abacha loot was criminally diverted under her watch, especially in light of her confessional statement that she transferred $322m from the Abacha loot to former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, to prosecute the war on terror. Apart from the said $322m, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala also released £5.5m to Dasuki. Even on this ground alone, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala cannot plausibly claim not to have anything to do with the arms procurement scandal. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala's excuse that the said $322m was released due to the urgency of the crisis in the North-East region is untenable having regard to the fact that former President Jonathan had sought the approval of the National Assembly to take a loan of $1bn to equip the armed forces to fight insurgency. Therefore, her self-induced urgency is not a justification for spending public funds without appropriation.

"In the course of my defending several military officers and soldiers who were charged before court-martial for demanding weapons to fight the terrorists I confirmed that the $1 billion loan for arms procurement. I was compelled to request Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for an inventory of the military equipment purchased with the $1 billion loan. The requested inventory was made available to me as the weapons were not purchased.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has continued to give the erroneous impression that she rendered selfless service to the nation. But while her colleagues who served as Ministers under President Olusegun Obasanjo were paid their salaries and allowances in the local currency she received hers in dollars despite a judgment of the Court of Appeal which had declared the payment illegal and unconstitutional in the case of Fawehinmi v The President (2007) 14 NWLR (Pt 1054) 275. In order to weep up sentiments Dr. Okonjo-Iweala referred to the unfortunate kidnap of her 84-year mother, two years ago. But it is public knowledge that the lumpen elements involved in the kidnap were arrested by the Lagos State Police Command. From the report of police investigation the kidnappers were palace guards who were inspired by sheer avarice. In fact, they were arrested by the Police following the disagreement over the sharing of the N12 million ransom paid to them for the criminal enterprise.

"The most ludicrous of Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala sweeping and jejune allegation is that some "corrupt elements" are using me as a tool. Although the allegation is without factual support it is illogical, to say the least. My request that the disbursement of the Abacha loot be investigated is further buttressed by the fact that the $500m Dr. Okonjo-Iweala claimed was spent on development projects was also not appropriated by the National Assembly, contrary to constitutional provisions. However, I have asked the EFCC to discountenance the 700-page report of the World Bank which has listed some phantom projects executed with the $500 million.

"In the Appropriation Act of 2011, the sum of N245 billion was budgeted for fuel subsidy. But at the end of the year, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala had authorized the illegal payment of about N2.5 trillion to a cabal of fuel importers. As usual, she washed off her hands like Pontius Pilate. In order to unearth the monumental fraud I petitioned the EFCC and gave oral testimony before the House of Representatives Committee which separately investigated it. In the same vein, I have just asked the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation under the Freedom of Information Act to provide information on the failure of the NNPC to pay into the Federation Account the sum of $9.7 billion out of the $11.8 billion dividends paid by NLNG from 2004-2014. I have equally demanded information from the NEITI over its claim that the NNPC and some oil companies are indebted to the Federal Government to the tune of $19.1 billion.

"Finally, let me make it abundantly clear that my petitions to the anti graft agencies and the Special Prosecutor of the ICC were anchored on law and facts as there is nothing personal in the ongoing battle to end impunity and retrieve the looted wealth of the nation from corrupt elements and institutions. It is my belief that the recovered loot should be channeled towards job creation and infrastructural development. Therefore, all hands should be on deck to ensure that the recovered loot is not criminally diverted by another set of looters .
